[There’s a gracious smile from her. It’s not all that surprising there’d be some curiosity around her time at the opera.]

Ah, of course. I did get into it fairly young. [And, well, thank the Goddess for that.] What is it you’d like to know?

I was wondering if it's something you chose to do... or if your parents were into it, something.

[ His tone is pretty aimless — he knows there might be any kind of explanation for how she ended up there, good and bad. ]

[Ah. She can’t help the way her gaze drifts away momentarily, but she tries to dismiss it with a smile when her attention snaps back up to him.]

Nothing to do with parents. [A slight shake of her head.] It was a complete accident of chance, to be honest. I had some budding talent as a child, and someone from the opera company overheard me singing one day… And it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

[She’s lucky it turned out to be something she genuinely enjoyed. The desperation to change her life could have led her anywhere.]

So you've been in it a long time.... damn, that had to be a lot of pressure when you were younger.

[ He has some reservations about the ethics of the arrangement she describes, but... it sounds like she really did enjoy singing. So, that's a relief. ]

It was quite a bit of pressure at first, yes, but I got used to it fairly quickly.

[And the relief of having a path forward into something of a better life far outweighed it anyway.]

So it does make this a bit easier to handle, you’re right. Though it is a little harder to relax sometimes knowing that this isn’t just a single performance taking up a bit of our day.
