What is this game?
Are You the One is a short-term, invite-only game based off the hit MTV reality dating show, "Are You the One?" There is a set number of contestants (somewhere between 14-16). Over the course of four weeks, contestants must find their destined partner, selected by a complex matchmaking algorithm (actually selected by means of a survey submitted with your application). By the end of every week, the group will submit who they believe these perfect pairs are. Should all pairs be correct by the first week, everyone will have a wish granted. However, for each week that all the pairs are wrong or a new perfect match hasn't been confirmed, one random contestant will lose the right to have their wish granted.
This game is stacked against them! There are no writing implements in the house for them to use to try to sketch out pairings, and so all they have is their brains and the bonds they make.
However, there is hope! And that hope is called the Truth Booth!
What the hell is the Truth Booth?
The Truth Booth looks like a harmless and adorable little gardening shed not too far away from the house. Every Thursday, the group can vote to send one couple into the Truth Booth to test their compatibility. On Friday the chosen couple will enter the Truth Booth and learn the results. In other words, it's a surefire way to verify whether the couple is a perfect match or not.
So how will selecting your match actually work at the ceremony?
Due to timezones and people just understandably not being able to be around for a chunk of time to do the selecting live, here's how it'll work for this game:
- On Saturday, characters will be given a mingle to discuss who they think everyone should match up with.
- On that same day, half of the characters will be chosen to be the ones doing the selecting. The next week, the other half will get to choose.
- Each of those characters submits here who they will actually be deciding to match up with. They will be choosing their top three choices, with IC reasoning. They are welcome to pick someone who the group didn't decide on for them! Feel free to go rogue ICly!
- In cases of overlap of pairs being picked, I as the mod will absolutely pick the pairings that I think are the funniest/cause the most IC drama because I am a savage like that.
Then on Sunday, there will be the proper reveal ceremony, and characters can react to the pairs chosen live! Please remember that while the pairs will be announced, the Overseer will only tell you how many pairs were correctly chosen, not which.
What happens if I find my perfect match?
Congratulations to the happy couple! You will now be moving out of the house you shared with all those people and into a lavish honeymoon suite, complete with all the amenities! You may enjoy your newfound privacy and bask in the knowledge that you did not Fuck It Up.
What if I don't like my perfect match in THAT way?
Welp! You still get a honeymoon suite! But I fully encourage you to ship with whoever the heck you want. Your perfect match is a bodacious blonde bombshell but you're more into that sexy immortal with the perpetual resting bitch face? Go for it! Create all the drama!! This is reality TV, babey!
Are we allowed to ship or date outside of our perfect matches?
If you don't do that, I, personally, will be deeply disappointed--so yes, please go wild. Again, this is meant to mimic reality TV. The more IC drama, the better--so also please keep that in mind when signing up! It may be that your perfect match is already macking on someone else ICly--if you think you might take that personally, this is probably not the game for you.
What happens if we guess everything wrong for the perfect matches/don't find a new perfect match that week?
The game continues, of course! But also one randomly selected contestant will lose their right to make a wish. No one will know who that is until the end of the game, so it's in your best interests to find all the perfect matches as quickly as possible!
There is hope, though! So long as at least one perfect match is found, no wishes will be lost that week.
How do we find the perfect matches?
How else do you find your true love? Go on dates! Spend time together! There will be mini, CR focused events to encourage bonding, so mingle with as many people as you can and see what clicks!
There will also be weekly lore drops about your character to help facilitate understanding for the characters who might be a bit cagier about their backstories.
I'm still confused about how AYTO works.
Go take a gander over here for a tailored mechanics FAQ!
What does the living situation look like?
Contestants will all be living in one big house with a spacious kitchen, dining room, cute bunk beds, and even bigger common room with a ton of comfy couches to get close on. They will also be sharing the same bedroom, though there are separate bathrooms. If you want to snuggle on one of the many couches in the main area though, or be a lone wolf and sleep under a table, feel free.
The house is tucked away in a cute city in an undetermined location. Your characters are welcome to go on fun shopping trips and the like, but they will unfortunately be filmed the whole way, and may end up with a whole group taking a field trip with them.
Can we bang?
So because this is the teen round, the Boom Boom Room (previously and infamously the Place Where Characters Would Bang in the show and in round 1) has been replaced by the Embrace Space. Teens are not being encouraged to slut it up here, but this is a room where they can hang out privately with someone else (or multiple someones if they're feeling spicy). The only requirement for this room is that they're engaging in some smooching of some sort.
Can they bang still if they want to, in that room or anywhere else? Yeah, teens will do what teens do, but the cameras are being shut off for that this round (and of course, utilize your content warnings appropriately! If it is happening in a public log, please move it to one of your journals).
If they do not engage in any sort of smooching/making out in the Embrace Space, they will be booted out into the living room for everyone to see their shame.
Will there be more chances for private conversations?
For the most part, no. Everything will be on the community, so all participants can witness the sparks fly and be well-informed enough to be able to decide who to submit as the perfect matches by the end of the week. The only exception is for dates (to be expanded upon later), the Embrace Space, and perfect matches that have officially been locked in. Honeymoon suite PCs will be allowed. No voyeurs!
What kind of character can I play here?
There are three requirements: The character must be between the ages of 16-19 (I will accept immortals who are within that realm of mental maturity or humanoids who also fit the bill). They must be able to admit they have terrible luck with relationships. And they must have decided to come here on their own, no being forced or kidnapped. Whether it's because they want to find true love or just really want their wish granted, either is valid, but they must be willing to interact with the dating game as a whole.
This is extremely important to making sure that this style of game works, so please bring a character who will sincerely engage with the conceit of the game!
Does sexual preference matter?
Nope! Gay, straight, bi, pan, ace, anyone is welcome!
Is there a cast cap?
There is a cast cap of 2 and a player cap of 14ish (I may bump this up to 16 depending on interest). Original characters are allowed and aren't subject to the same cast cap unless they come from the same universe.
Can my character bring their pet/living companion thing?
THIS ROUND.............. YES.
Who is the Overseer?
the overseer is this loser. sorry.
Will characters still have any canon powers?
Yes, barring mind-reading and world-ending powers. Please keep in mind the Overseer will also step in if any actual killing is attempted, and no acts of violence will be permitted against the Overseer. Utilize your powers to have a good time, and just be reasonable with them!
Can I stop these cameras from filming everything I do?
No, it's in the contract you signed to get here. If you menace the cameramen, you'll get put into time out and it will be embarrassing for you (so by all means, do so if you want to).
Can I date the Overseer?
yeah maybe. He definitely won't be your perfect match, though.
I played in a previous round, tl;dr, what's the stuff that's changed?
For those of you who have played in this style of game before, there are a few key changes this round! To put it as simply as possible:
- smaller cast, to try to allow for everyone to be able to tag everyone else in the time allowed
- Challenges have been removed, and will be replaced with simple cr-building events to encourage relationship growth. I reserve the right to pair people up anyway if I think it's funny
- Thus, since there won't be challenge winners to vote on for the truth booth, characters can vote for whichever pair they want, except for any involving themselves. This should allow for greater strategizing! Maybe!
- Weekly character lore dumps to hopefully make it easier to figure out what matches might be and why
- A Talking Heads Section. Is it truly a reality TV show without one?
